Charlotte North Carolina City Profile

Nicknamed the Queen City and named after the wife of British King George III, Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. It is also the second-largest banking center in America, trailing only New York City. Founded as an intersection between two Indian trading paths, Charlotte has become a major U.S. financial center, and both the nation's second largest (Bank of America) and fourth largest banks (Wachovia) call the city home. Due to its drive for economic development and financial prowess, Charlotte is often regarded a "new" American city even though it's actually one of America's oldest larger cities. The NASCAR Hall of Fame, set to open in 2009, will reside in Charlotte.
